"Face of San Antonio by Bob Dale

"(A city has many faces, the faces of its people, and behind each face is a story. Here is a profile in drawing and words, one of a series through which you may meet interesting individuals. Their features, together with yours, make up the face of San Antonio.)

"Miss Irene Henderson

"Were your ancestors rich or poor, patriots or horse thieves? If you really want to know, Miss Irene Henderson is the person to contact. She is president of the Southwest Genealogical Society.

"The society's object is the acquisition by purchase or gift genealogical books, pamphlets, papers, manuscripts and records. Printed matter is held in the society's library for the use and benefit of members, according to Mrs. Henderson. The reference collection is housed in the rare books section of the San Antonio Library. Available only to qualified and acceptable researchers, Miss Henderson said, the society's material includes such volumes as: James Savages Genealogical Dictionary of the first settlers of New England, Clemens American Marriage Records before 1699 and a listing of American Colonists in English records, to list but a few.

"All material in the library is catalogued by states making it much easier to locate family histories. The society's book committee, Mrs. W. L. Garvey, Mrs. Henry Austin Parry and Mrs. J. M. Ryan, screen all books, pamphlets, manuscripts and magazine subscriptions as to the genealogical material contained; its probable value to the society; and its availability in other local libraries before additions are made to the society's library.

"Limited to 40 active members, the society at present has 35 members. There are no restrictions on the number of associate members, Miss Henderson said, adding they also may use the library at any time. The society meets at 2 p.m. the fourth Friday of each month except April and December, in the Baskim room, San Antonio College Library.

"Miss Henderson is a former English teacher at Brackenridge High School. She retired in 1968 after a teaching career that began in Hondo High School in the early 1920's when she was a teenager. A graduate of Baylor University, she's a Delta Kappa Gamma Beta Chapter, program chairman of the Wesleyan Guild, Travis Park Methodist Church and defense chairman of the Alamo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Miss Henderson is a member of the San Antonio Retired Teachers Association. She lives at 9014 Rock Cliff Road."
