Obituary of Frances Lillian Goodwin Coogan

FRANCES COOGAN
Swannanoa - Frances Lillian Goodwin Coogan, 92, a loving mother and
grandmother of five, of Harrison Hill Road, died Thursday, Sept. 30,
2004.
A native of Sweetwater, Texas, she spent her childhood in Plainview,
Texas, where she graduated from nursing school. She was a daughter
of the late Walter and Zodell Goodwin and the widow of Jay Gardiner Coogan, who died in December 2000. A registered nurse, she volunteered with the American Red Cross
during World War II and later served many community service groups
including the Council on Aging. She lived for 23 years in Westminister,
Calif., where she was very active in her church, the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Moving to Swannanoa Valley in 2002, she was associated with St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by four
brothers and four sisters.
Surviving are two sons, Michael Coogan of Vancouver, Wash., and David Coogan of Santa Rosa, Calif.; daughter, Vicki Svatos and her husband,
Joseph, of Swannanoa; two sisters, Ruby Hudgins of Farmington, N.M.
and Verna Johnson of Boise, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-
grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Crossroads
Assembly of God with the Revs. J. Michael Brown, Glynn Bachelor,
Robert Chuprevich and Isaac Owolabi officiating. Burial will be in
Mountain View Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Missions Fund of
Crossroads Assembly of God, 20 South Bear Creek Road, Ashville, NC
28806.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Penland &
Sons Funeral Home in Swannanoa.
