Mafee Roberta Miller was born on July 24, 1904 in Browntown, Warren County, Virginia, the daughter of Charles T. Miller and Lula Manuel Miller. The spelling of her name has been documented in various ways including Mattie. She married (Edwin) Grafton Updike on Feb 25, 1920, the son of Dr. Charles Franklin Updike and Annie Wilson Brown Updike of Browntown, Virginia.

Mafee and Grafton were blessed with one daughter, Hilda MARGARETTA Updike Margaretta Updike Oates who was born Jun 25, 1922. Mayfee died as a very young wife and mother on Jan 20, 1925 when Margaretta was still a little girl. According to the death certificate, Mafee's cause of death was influenza with acute cerebral meningitis contributory.

Margaretta's father served as deputy sheriff in Warren County and managed the Downing Farm in the Fork District of Warren County.

Margretta lived with Mafee's parents Lula Manuel Miller Wines and Charles T. Miller
while her father worked fulltime.

Mafee's widower / Margretta's father, Edwin Grafton Updike, remarried on Dec 23, 1928 to Margaret Virginia Fox. Grafton and Margaret Virginia were blessed with three sons thus giving Margaretta three half brothers: 1) Edwin Grafton Updike, Jr. 2)Bradford Julian Updike and 3) Jesse Ken Updike.

In the 1930 US Census Margaretta was 8 years old and is living with her father and his new young wife

Both Grafton and his second wife are buried at Bennett's Chapel Cemetery in Warren County, Virginia.

According to the Robert S. Craig book, THE UPDIKES/UPDYKES OF VIRGINIA, Mayfie (Mafee)was buried at Browntown, Virginia in the Browntown Cemetery, but so far I have been unable to find the grave or a cemetery with such a name. Her death certificate which is attached to this Find A Grave memorial says buried at Browntown, VA., but does not state which cemetery in Browntown. When I asked locals no one seems to know.
