James Madison Ashley, Sr. is the son of Marion Arthur Ashley and Minnie Chadwick Ashley.
He was the Husband of Mozelle Tate Ashley.

Funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Collier-Butler Chapel from James M. Ashley, 86, Rainbow City, who died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001. The Revs. Alton Parris and Harry Skaggs will officiate. Burial will be in Forrest Cemetery. Collier-Butler Funeral Home is in charge.
Mr. Ashley was a longtime resident of Etowah County. He was a veteran, having served with the Navy in World War II. He attended Southwestern (now known as Rhodes) College in Memphis and Jacksonville State. He had retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber with 40 years service, after which he became active in real estate. He was very involved in civic, community and sports activities, especially those involving youth. He had organized and coached several youth football and baseball teams and also had worked with the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of East Gadsden United Methodist Church and had taught Sunday School many years. Mr. Ashley had worked with the Department of Parks and Recreation and had served as chairman of the Recreation Board of Gadsden.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha Hollingsworth; four brothers, Howard, John, Billy and Richard Ashley.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mozelle Ashley; daughters, Diane Gravlee and Denise Huselton; son, James "Jimmy" Ashley, Jr.; grandchildren, Addison and Carter Rains, Stephanie and Alex Huselton and London Gravlee; sisters, Marion Pleasant and Minnie Lee Ashley; several nieces and nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Drew Gravlee, Patrick Huselton, Todd Rains, Vachel Tate, Ron Townsend and Lamar Nabors.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Bedwell, Frank Bedwell, Stan Hollingsworth and Adam Gravlee.
The family will accept flowers or memorials may be made to East Gadsden First United Methodist Church.
The family would like to express their appreciation to special caregivers, Nettie Hooks and Linda Nunn.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
