Michael Joseph Bartley
M. J. (Joe) Bartley, 51 Dies here; Funeral to be Saturday. Following an illness of six weeks, Michael Joseph Bartley, 51, 916 Third Avenue South, deputy sheriff and a former grocer, died early Wednesday at a local hospital. Bartley entered the hospital a month ago and on Tuesday, Dec. 16, underwent an operation for stomach trouble.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9:15 at the chapel and at 9:30 at St. Ann's cathedral, where holy mass will be celebrated. Burial will be in the family plot in Mount Olivet cemetery.
A native Montanan, Bartley was born July 20 1890 at Fort Benton. He attended public schools at Fort Benton and worked as assistant manager of the T. C. Power & Brother general merchandise store at Fort Benton until 1924. The following year, Bartley entered the grocery business in Great Falls, opening the Bartley grocery at 418 Central avenue. He retired from that line of business in 1939.
In January, 1926, Bartley was married to Miss Helen Seifert of Great Falls, who died on Oct. 8 of this year. During the World War, he was with the 40th division and served in France for 14 months with an American expeditionary force. While operating the grocery store and after his retirement Bartley was engaged in sheep raising and ranching in Teton county. He and a brother, Charles E. Bartley, operated the Bartley Brothers ranch 16 miles west of Bynum.
In 1940, Bartley was a candidate for the democratic nomination as sheriff of Cascade county. When Andy Loberg took office in November of that year, he was appointed a deputy sheriff.
Bartley was a member of the American Legion, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors are three children, Leo Joseph, 15; James Anthony, 12, and Mary Helen, 6; four brothers, J. M. Bartley of Great Falls, Charles E. Bartley of Bynum, Frank P. Bartley of Spokane and John A. Bartley of New York city; two aunts, Miss Margaret Egan of Stanford and Mrs. P. E. Sullivan of Sedalia, Mo., and an uncle, Peter Bartley of Beach, N. D.
