Found Dead in Cabin
Oliver Hofmaster, 70, was found dead in his cabin on Little Spearfish creek, some 6 miles from Savoy, Sunday morning, by a neighbor who had called to see him. County authorities were notified and Dr. A.S. Jackson, of Lead, county coroner, and Deputy Sheriff Helmer left for the scene and after an investigation, the body was removed to a Lead undertaking parlor. Death had resulted from natural causes, and no inquest will be held. Deceased had lived in the canyon for several years and for some time this summer had been a member of the construction crew working on the Whitewood tunnel.

Lead Daily Call newspaper, September 17, 1929 - "Funeral services for Oliver Hofmaster, 70, who was found dead early Sunday morning in his cabin on Little Spearfish creek, about five miles from Savoy, were held at 3:30 o'clock this afternoon from the Rounsevell parlors and burial took place in the South Lead cemetery. Deceased was survived by his wife, Mrs. Mae Hofmaster, of Aberdeen, this state, who was unable to attend, and a step-daughter, Mrs. Velma Sprague of this city. Following the finding of the body by a neighbor, County Coroner A.S. Jackson and Deputy Sheriff Helmer went to the scene but an investigation revealed that death had resulted from natural causes and no inquest was held."
