William was the oldest son of Rev. William Read and Nancy Keyes of Stillwater, Saratoga county, New York. He was married first to Silvia Handy and had one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth (Read) Stead. After Silvia's death, he then married Ruby Snell, daughter of Isaac Snell and Phebe Cornell of Easton, N.Y.
