James Allen Seaton, born Jefferson County, Kentucky, moved with his father's family to a farm in Columbus, Adams Co., Illinois fourteen miles east of Quincy in 1844. He attended public school and, in his youth, divided his time between work on the farm, teaching school and attending a Presbyterian Academy at Clayton, Illinois, from 1859 to 1861. In February 1862, he married Mary E. Bradley also from Columbus.
