Mary E. Moorhead came of age at the time of the Civil War.
Her first husband, Grandison Blanton, was a young Confederate Veteran when they married in 1864. He had survived a pelvic wound, capture after Gettysburg and was released from service. They had two children: a daughter & son; and in less than five years, both he and the baby son died of a Congestive Chill (of the lungs.) There was a foray to Texas at this time. Records are confusing as to whether they died there or in Georgia, but they are buried in Texas.
In 1870, widowed Mary & her daughter Annie Blanton were back in Forysth County, GA, residing with her also widowed mother, Rebecca J. Moorhead & siblings. Presumably, on the family farm. Her young brothers were providing labor.
Rebecca re-married Enoch Pruitt in 1879.
And Mary re-married J. Levi Burress in 1875. He was 38 and had been farming in Anderson County, SC, all his life. How the two met is not certain. But they were married for about 31 Years until his death in 1906. They had four children together: 2 sons & 2 daughters. The youngest son David stayed on farming with Mary until some time after 1910. By 1920, Mary lived alone. She died 1n 1926 at the age of 78. A full life for those turbulent times. JT
