Nathan came to Hollis from Milford Massachusetts around 1800 at age 17 with a common school education and the knowledge of the trade of house painting. In the winter months he taught school for many years. He was a member of the Hollis School Committee in 1817, 1818, 1821, 1822, 1825 and 1827; Superintending Committee in 1828-1830. He was a Justice of the Peace from 1822 -1830 and a Representative to the New Hampshire General Court in 1812, 1819-1821. While living in Hollis his residence was at 35 Main Street in an older house in front of the one that is now there.
