Death Takes Michigan Rig-Builder Wilbur H. Watters
Wilbur H. Watters, 44, well-known rig builder, died at the General Hospital in Mt. Pleasant MI, Thursday afternoon following an attack of peritonitis. Born Aug. 3, 1890, in Oakdale, Pennsylvania, on a farm which has been the home of the Watters family for five generations, having been purchased from William Penn, Mr. Watters came to Michigan six years ago when the oil fields opened. The majority of the rigs in the Central Michigan field were built by Mr. Watters and his crew. In the first two years of the industry here he employed between 35 and 40 men. At the time of his death he gave employment to fifteen. When he was 18 years of age he left the farm to work for a rig builder in Pennsylvania. Since that time he worked on rigs in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Oklahoma, before coming to Michigan, one of the largest rigs in Pennsylvania being credited to him. During the past few years he had turned down opportunities to follow his trade in the foreign oil fields. Although Mr. Watters had been in poor health all winter, he continued working in the field as late as Friday and was not seriously ill until Sunday. Tuesday he was taken to the hospital where he died two days later. Funeral services were conducted by the Wabon Lodge of the F. and A.M. from the late residence, and burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant MI. Besides his wife, Mary Hope Watters, he is survived by 3 sons, Donald, Billy and Robert; one daughter Ruth Ann; his mother, Mrs. Mary Watters, of Oakdale, Pa., 5 brothers, Walter Howard (his twin) of Mt. Pleasant MI; Charles, Samuel, Lester, and Martin of Oakdale PA; three sisters, Mrs. Cora Bock, of Oakdale PA, Mrs. Jane Manson of Addison NY, and Mrs. Charles Brown, of Crafton PA. Mrs. Wilbur H. Watters late this week announced that she would carry on her husband's business. She will be assisted by her brother-in-law, Howard Watters, who has been actively associated with the late Wilbur H. Watters in the field here. Mrs. Watters wants to express her appreciation of the patronage extended to her husband by the various companies and contractors during his life, and hopes to be able to merit their continued confidence and patronage in the future. Mrs. Watters will take over the business management, while the active field work will be under the direction of Howard Watters.

The leading occurance of local interest this week took place in a distant city, in the death of Wilbur F. Watters at Mt. Pleasant MI. This supplementary notice will correct some inaccuracies in notices on inside of this paper, for which we apologize. The Watters, almost Oakdale's oldest family, three generations born and raised in the same spot on Oakdale's South Hill, and the death this last week was the first break in the present large family, except the father three years ago. Those surviving are the mother, and the six brothers, known to us all; the sisters, Mrs. Jane Manson of Addison NY, Mrs. Cora Bock of Oakdale PA, and Mrs. Agnes Brown of Crafton PA. The widow, who was Miss Mary Hope of Oakdale PA, with her children Donald, William, [this is Wilbur Jr.], Bobby, and Ruth Ann will remain in Mt. Pleasant in the conduct of the large contracting business of deceased with the aid of his brother Howard. The funeral services at the home in Mt. Pleasant MI were conducted by the Rev. McKenzie, Pastor of Mt. Pleasant M. E. Church, and by the Deputy Masonic Grand Master of Michigan at the grave. Sixteen automobiles conveyed the Masons in a body from the home to the cemetery. The floral offerings were overwhelming, over seventy in number were banked and overhung every available inch of the house. Only about half were taken to the cemetery, the rest distributed to hospitals. Among them were beautiful tokens from the Oakdale Masonic Lodge, and from other friends and neighbors here.
