Commodore James Thorne Smith, U.S.N. retired, died suddenly yesterday at the residence of his son, Skyring Thorne Smith, 15 Watkins street, New Rochelle. He was born in 1855 in Wadesboro, N.C., and was graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1875. In the Spanish-American War Commodore Smith served aboard the Yosemite. He saw service in the Philippines insurrection and the Boxer uprising. When the United States entered the World War he returned from retirement and served as Supervisor of the Harbor of New York. Two sons survive, Skyring Thorne and James Thorne Smith. His clubs were the Army and Navy, New York Yacht and Larchmont Yacht. He also was a member of several service organizations. He will be buried at Annapolis.
