I will attempt to write a bit of history about Emily Catherine Upshaw Armstrong, my husband's great grandmother. Her daughter : Laura Mae Armstrong Coleman was my husband's grandmother and all of my information came from her as she used to stay with my husband and I for months at a time. Laura was about 11 years old when her mother was hospitalized. She was the 6th child of 9. Emily was born in 1856 in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. She married John Sherman DeKalb Armstrong May 7, 1876 in Chapel Hill, Washington, TX at the age of 19. John had been married previously and had 4 children by that wife who died in 1875. Those children ranged from 10 years to 3 years. John had served in the Civil War and was a circuit preacher which took him from home quite often. He and Emily had their first child in 1877 and 8 more children arrived every 1, 2 or 3 years making a total of 13 that Emily had to cook for, do laundry and this was wash tubs, well water to be drawn on wash days, clothes lines and ironing with sad irons heated on a wood stove even in the heat of summer. Hard work for a small woman. Granny Laura told me that her mom was very depressed and would wander away from home and not know where she lived or her own children. This used to be called manic/depression and now called Bi-Polar which I believe she must have suffered from because it is still in the family tree. Emily gave birth to her last child in 1895 and was hospitalized in 1898 where she spent the rest of her life. John, her husband, died in 1901. There were 7 minor children who were placed in foster homes. The older children moved in with relatives or went out on their own. Our Granny Laura was placed with a family named Pilot (Pee lot) and had a son named Pierre that she remembered and talked about frequently. Some years ago there was a large grocery chain called Henke/Pilot. I often wonder if that was the family she was with. The family was completely separated in all their growing up, marrying and child bearing years until in the mid fifties somehow they reconnected and had a wonderful reunion in Kountze, Texas at the home of Granny Laura's daughter. Laura married Thomas Coleman and had 2 daughters; my husband's mother Gracie and Louise. It was at Louise's home where they had their reunion and they stayed in touch often until death began to claim them. God rest all their troubled souls. Mary Braneff
