The south Chapel was built by John Carey, 3rd Lord Hunsdon, in about 1610 in his own lifetime to hold a tomb for him and his wife. His monument in alabaster is of the highest sculptural quality then available in England.
Baron Hunsdon is a title that has been created twice. It was first created in 1558/9 in the Peerage of England by Queen Elizabeth for her cousin Sir Henry Carey,(a soldier and courtier)to whom she gave Hunsdon House.
