The son of Levi & Lydia (Smith) Burd, in 1860, he was a farmer living with William & Elizabeth Burd in Centre Township, Perry County. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and black eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 30, 1864, as a private with Co. E, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.

He married Mary E. Moore and fathered Ernest E. (b. 08/07/71), Irvin W. (b. 02/08/73), Daisy "Lulu" (b. 11/05/74), Alice (b. 07/03?/76), William (b. 05/??/80), Jenevieve Lile (b. 08/13/81), Samuel (b. 03/02/83), Levi (b. 06/03/85), and Mamie & Alice (b. 07/02/87). In 1870, he lived with his family in Seward Township, Winnebago County, Illinois and, by 1900 (and probably before), resided in Byron, Ogle County, Illinois. Please note that there is disagreement on some of the children's precise birth dates.
