Alma Slater Wayment, 96, of Burley, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011.

Alma was born in Paul, Idaho, on July 31, 1915, to Alma Earnest and Mary Jane Slater Wayment. He was the fifth child of their eight children. He spent his early years in Paul and Jerome. In 1928, the family relocated to Slaterville, Utah. Alma spent his high school years going to school in Ogden, Utah, and summers in Jerome working on the Bacon Ranch. He graduated from Weber County High School in 1931. Alma entered the United States Army in 1941 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and served as a squad leader in the infantry in the Pacific Theater of Operations (New Guinea). He received the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal and the Purple Heart. He was promoted to staff sergeant.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Beth Dalton on May 22, 1945. They were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on May 9, 1956. They had three children, Dal Dalton (Judy) Wayment, Beth Ann (Gale) Wrigley and Kathleen (Richard K.) Diamond. When released from the service, Slater worked as a mail carrier in Ogden, Utah. In 1945, Alma and Beth moved to their farm south of Burley, where he resided until his death. Alma farmed and worked for C and R Case Equipment Company in Paul and later as a tare man for the beet factory at Elcock Beet Dump until his retirement. He loved to spend winters in Quartzsite, Ariz., and summers between home and Wood River in Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beth; his parents; and siblings, Fern Gibson, Byron S. Wayment, Grant S. Wayment, Stanley S. Wayment, John S. Wayment, Harold S. Wayment and Mary Gloe Welling.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, at the View LDS Church, 550 S. 490 E. of Burley, with Bishop Von Gibby officiating. Burial will be in the View Cemetery, with military rites provided by the Mini-Cassia Veterans Organization.
