Obituary-Mrs. Zerelda Jane Brown, wife of A.B. Brown, Sr., in her 82 year, of typhoid pneumonia, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Brown was born in Garrard county December 19, 1828, being the twin sister of George E. Jennings, deceased. She was the daughter of Samuel and Rosanna Jennings and has lived in this county all of her life. Mrs. Brown was twice married, the first time to Jas. Allen Stephens, who died in 1850, leaving her a widow with three daughters, one of whom died in infancy, the other, Marietta Stephens Drake died 38 years ago.
In 1855 she was married to A.B. Brown, Sr., who survives. To this union were born six children, two sons and four daughters; Geo. F. Brown, of this county and J.H. Brown, deceased; Mrs. W. S. Holman, Aurora, Ind., Mrs. H. D. Arnold, Mineral Wells, Texas, and Miss Allie B. Brown, of Louisville.
Mrs. Brown was a beautiful Christian character, was full of good deeds and charitable to all. She was a kind neighbor and loved by all who knew her, none ever entered her home without a warm welcome nor left without feeling the warmth of a genuine hospitality, so characteristic of people of her ancestry. Disease did not destroy the charm of a kind indulgent disposition, nor old age diminish her solicitude for her friends and loved ones. Adhering to the faith of her fathers, she united with the Christian church in early life and loved to attend its services when health permitted. While she has continued to enjoy the society of her friends and children, she has for several years, realized her active life was over and has awaited the Divine call from death unto life.
As the dew gathered on her marble brow, around her bedside gathered her boys and girls-always a boy and girl to her, although grown to mature years with boys and girls around their own firesides. The life so long interwoven with hers, with tearful eyes they watched as it, slowly but surely passed over. The love of a mother for her children passeth human understanding. Her daughters that gathered about the cot of this dying mother and so bravely fought the Death Angel, long ago passed out from the little home circle. Business cares and their own home circles have encroached upon their time, and may have robbed their mother of their companionship, but she was ever the same; rejoicing in their success and grieving in their misfortunes. They may have grown away from her, but she never away from them; they were still her girls. We know that years hence the memory of her unselfish devotion will make them better women and her precepts be their guiding star.
Her presence will be missed, but she has gone on to join those gone before. She had often expressed herself as willing and ready to go any time the Master should call. Her death was peaceful and quiet. She has left her children the heritage of a beautiful Christian life. May she rest in peace.
