Conrad Lee Roberts, former longtime resident of Twentynine Palms, passed away Oct. 30, 2010, at his home in Poplar Bluff, Mo., of congestive heart failure. He was 83 years old.

The son of Samuel Elijah (Dee) and Bertha Helton Roberts, Conrad was born on April 17, 1927, in Ellsinore, Mo.

Mr. Roberts was a U.S. Marine veteran, serving four years in duty stations that included a tour in China.

In November 1954, he came to Twentynine Palms with his family to work for San Bernardino County as a building inspector. He later went to work at the Marine Corps base Facilities Maintenance Department Carpenter Shop, rising to the position of foreman. In 1973, he transferred to MCAS, Yuma, Ariz., and upon retirement from Civil Service, he moved to his native Missouri.

Mr. Roberts had many interests and talents. It seemed he always had a project going in his workshop. He built furniture, a dune buggy and a canoe, and even a Harley Davidson motorcycle that came to the workshop in boxes. He held a U.S. patent on a tool that he had designed.

He tried his hand at making candles, jewelry and toys. He enjoyed reading and talking on his ham radio.

Mr. Roberts was a charter member of Twentynine Palms BPOE 2134, and volunteered with the Twentynine Palms Unit of the San Bernardino County Search and Rescue.

Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his father; stepfathers Dewey Payne and Stanley Kozenski; his mother; grandson Caleb McIntosh; grandson-in-law Joseph Chapman; and stepgrandsons Phillip Tyler and D.J. Montgomery.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou. He also is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Mary Lee and Francis Tromblay of Twentynine Palms, Suzi and Charles Schneider of Angel's Camp and Wendy and John McIntosh of Woodbridge, Va.; grandchildren and their spouses Erin (Tromblay) Chapman, Conrad Lee Tromblay, Stephen and Sabrina Tromblay, Stacey (Schneider) and Kurt Nakata, Alexander and Hilary Schneider, Kimberlee (McIntosh) and Wayne Wigglesworth, Melissa, Evan and Dylan McIntosh; and great-grandchildren Travis and Tyler Nakata, and Keara and Jay Wigglesworth.

Graveside services, with full military honors, were held Tuesday, Nov. 2 at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Poplar Bluff, Mo.
