OAK PARK - Funeral for Dale Allen Morris, age 67, of the Oak Park Community, was held Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at Pendleton Springs Missionary Baptist Church, with Rev. Walter Jarrell officiating. He was laid to rest in the Morris Family Cemetery near his home. He died Thursday, Sept. 8th, in Community Hospice of Vidalia after an extended illness.
Mr. Morris was born in Denton, GA, on November 5, 1943. A graduate of Oak Park High School, he was a member of Pendleton Springs Missionary Baptist Church. A charter member of McLeod-Moring Camp #1386, Sons of Confederate Veterans, Swainsboro, he was a past Adjutant and Camp Commander and held the state office of Southeast Brigade Commander. He had also been an active member of the Military Order of the Stars and Bars on the state level. Dale was very proud of his Southern heritage, and he loved his family and his country. Among his many interests was the restoration of vintage cars; he was also an accomplished woodworker; he had the ability to fix almost anything. After 34 years of service, Mr. Morris retired from Georgia DOT in 1996 with the title of engineer.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Shellie and Genevieve Lewis Morris, and his brothers, Eldred and Warren Morris.
Survivors include three children: Allen Morris and Ginger of Mount Vernon, Lisa Morris Oliver and Drayton of Lyons, and Melanie Morris and Clint Smith of Oak Park; three granddaughters: Jade and Jesslen Morris of Mount Vernon, and Darby Oliver of Lyons; his wife, Melissa Millsap, and her daughter, Betsy McGriff, both of Register. Also surviving are two aunts, Myrtice Sconyers of Swainsboro, and Dean Morris of Oak Park; mother of his children, Olivia Williamson Braddy of Oak Park; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Active pallbearers were Andy Morris, Jimmy Lewis, Jonathan Williamson, Kevin Morris, Julian Sconyers, and Tim Williamson. Honorary pallbearers were classmates of Oak Park High.
A memorial service was held at the cemetery by uniformed SCV members from various local camps, including McLeod-Moring, Robert Toombs, and Montgomery Sharpshooters. Three vollies were fired from their rifles, each followed by the firing of a Confederate cannon. Following the salute and the playing of "Taps," the Confederate Flag, which had been draped over the casket at the beginning of the ceremony, was removed and folded properly before being presented to Mr. Morris' son, Dale Allen Morris Jr. The ceremony closed with prayer by a Camp Chaplain.
