Anna Marie Backhaus

Mrs. Anna Maria Backhaus, nee Schmidt, was born March 7, 1844, in Kirschspiel Spange, Minden, Prussia. With her parents she came to this country and settled in Clayton County. In April, 1857, she was confirmed by Rev. Stockfeld at Ceres and in February, 1860, she was married to Mr. Henry Backhaus. They moved onto a farm a few
miles south of Garnavillo where she has always made her home.

Eight children were born to this union, two sons, Herman and William, preceding the mother in death. The father died on July 23rd, 1898. Those left to mourn are: two sons, John of Luana and Henry of Garnavillo; four daughters, Mrs. Wm. Putzier of S.D., Mrs. Henry Miller of Manly, Mrs. Max Meyer of Garnavillo and Mrs. Chas. Reichart of Littleport; also five brothers, George Schmidt of Pine City, Minn, Edward of Spirit Lake, Ia, Paul of Brodwell, Canada, Herman of Arcadia, Nebr, William of Idaho; three sisters, Mrs. Sophie Warnke of Carroll, Ia, Mrs. Kate Andrew and Mrs. Joe Young of Benton Co., Ia, 23 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Deceased was a
diligent and zealous church worker, with the welfare of her church ever at heart, and was possessed of those qualities of thrift, which characterized the early
settlers of this section. Recently she underwent an operation at Elkader, which at first gave prospects of her recovery, but God willed otherwise and she passed away
Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 4th, at the age of 75 years, 7 months and 28 days.

The remains were brought to the Max Meyer home here and the funeral was held Friday with services at St. Peter's church, Rev. Bosholm officiating. Interment was made
in the Ceres cemetery.
