Byron enlisted in the Army Reserves 29 April 1970, at a recruiting office in Newtown, North Dakota and later volunteered for active duty.
When Byron arrived in Vietnam 18 July 1971, he was assigned to F Troop, 8th Calvary, 196th Infantry Brigade, USARV. Byron was the pilot of a UH-1U #67-1780 with 3 crew members aboard on a rescue mission to recover a crew of a downed Air Force pilot, when the helicopter was shot down at approximately 1920H and 5 kilometers north of the Dong Ha Base, near the DMZ by hostile fire. The UH-1H crashed and 3 crew members crashed and 1 was taken prisoner and was released 5 March 1973. The bodies of the 3 crew members were not recovered. Byron was listed as Missing In Action 2 April 1972. His body was repatriated 8 February 1993 and identified 7 February 1994.
Survived by his wife, Leona P Kulland of PO Box 42, Parshall, North Dakota and his parents; Harold O and Nina Marie Kulland of Route #2, Newtown, North Dakota.
