Death Notice
At Bedloe Island Hospital, New York, January 27th, Lieut. CHEYNEY T. HAINES, youngest son of Wm. E. and Ella M. Haines, of Franklin township, of wounds received at the charge of Fort Fisher, aged 22 years, 4 months and 24 days; belonged to Company G, 97th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, 2d Division, 2d Brigade, 24th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac. The following is Biographical Information from the "History of the Ninety-seventh regiment, Pennsylvania volunteer infantry", By Isaiah Price :

1st Lieut. Cheyney T. Haines, a miller from Chandlerville, Pa ; enlisted at age 19 as a private on Oct. 28, 1861, for 3 yrs.; in Company G, 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to corp. Dec. 10, 1863 and reenlisted as a veteran at Fernandina , Florida on March 16, 1864, to date Feb. 29, 1864;. He was wounded in action at Green Plains, Bermuda Hundred , Va. on May 20, 1864 and again wounded in action at Cemetery Hill, near Petersburg, Va., on June 30, 1864; promoted to Sergt, Major on Sept. 18, 1864 and to 1st Lieut. on Dec. 1, 1864.

During the Action a Fort Fisher North Carolina on January 15, 1865 he was mortally wounded and died in the U. S. Hosp., New York, Jan. 27, 1865. [Pr. to brev. capt. by order of War Dept. to rank from March 13, '65.]

1st Lieut. Cheyney T. Haines, Company G, was mortally wounded in the thigh and died in hospital, at New York, two weeks later. This was the third time he had been wounded in action.

The War Department soon after conferred brevet promotion for gallant and meritorious service, at Fort Fisher, upon the following officers of the 97th P. V., to date from March 13, 1865, viz.:
1st Lieut. Cheyney T. Haines (died of his wounds), Company G,
all as captains.
