Oliver E. Coyle, Sr., 91, of 319 Overhill Drive, Gaffney, S.C. died August 28, 2011 at Peachtree Centre.

Born November 15, 1919 in Gaffney on November 15, 1919, he was the son of the late Tom & Lala Coyle.

He was the former owner of Economy Upholstering Co. and retired from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department. Mr. Coyle was a U. S. Navy veteran, serving as a seaman in World War II.

On May 31, 2004 he was named to the Cherokee County Veteran's Hall of Bravery. He received a U. S. Navy Commendation Metal for Heroic Achievement and the Naval Purple Heart in 1944 for wounds received while serving in the Pacific aboard the USS Samuel B. Roberts in the largest engagement ever fought on the high seas.

He had a love for flying and was a private pilot. He was certified as a pilot for the Civil Air Patrol on August 11, 1955. Mr. Coyle was also a member of Gaffney Masonic Lodge 186 and attended Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Smalley Coyle;

a daughter, Jean Coyle High; sons, Oliver Coyle, Jr. (Joyce) and Robert T. Coyle (Fran) of Gaffney; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Alton Coyle of Spokane, Wa.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Idell Herrin and Frances Laraue.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 30, 2011 at Frederick memorial Gardens with Dr. Clyde Thomas officiating.
