He attended Edgewood High School for the first two years and graduated from DeForest High School in 1949. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps attending boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. At the outbreak of the Korean Conflict, Bill served with the A (Stable Able) Company, 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Wounded twice in battle receiving two Purple Hearts, Bill also suffered frost bite at the Chosin (Changjin) Reservoir.
On 10 November 1951, he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Doris LaVonne Manthe at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church in the Town of Leeds north of Madison. At the time of his death, Bill was employed at Wisconsin Fineblanking in Deerfield and a member of Eastside Ev. Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Doris; his father, William Sr, of Cross Plains; his children, Timothy (Ranee) of DeForest, Robert (Deborah) of Colorado Springs, Scott (Sun Sook) of Dubuque, Iowa; and his grandchildren, Anthony, Sara, Ian, and Logan; along with numerous other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sybil, and daughter, Laurel Lee.
Funeral services will be held at Eastside Ev. Lutheran Church, 2310 Independence Lane, at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 24, 1987. Pastor Paul Soukup will officiate. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 23, 1987, at the Gunderson Funeral Home, 5203 Monona Drive.
