James Bean was the son of William Bean III and Anna Buckalew (Anna md. Andrew Edwards 2 years after James' father, William Bean died, but at the time of James Bean's birth his mother's name was Anna Buckalew Bean.) James Bean was born 3 March 1804 in Elkton (then Christian and now Todd County), Kentucky. When he was four his parents moved to Missouri, and when he was five, his father died of an unidentified illness. Shortly afterward his mother remarried and he was raised by his stepfather. Their family grew up on the frontier.
James met and fell in love with Elizabeth Lewis, who was born in Lincoln County, Missouri, 22 September 1804 to James Lewis and Sarah McCoy. He married Elizabeth on 27 July 1824, in Lincoln County. Their first two children, William and Nancy were born in Missouri. They moved from here across the Mississippi River into Adams County, Illinois and located on a farm north of the city of Quincy. Five more children (Sarah Ann, George Washington, James Addison, Mary Elizabeth & Cornelia) were added to the family here. As the Mormons were driven from Missouri in the dead of winter the Bean family and some of their neighbors opened their homes to them. They heard the Restored Gospel from the Mormons and believed what they heard. They were baptized in 1841. They moved to Nauvoo. For five years they lived with the Saints in Nauvoo and then on 1 May 1847 they were driven out and crossed the Mississippi River for the last time. They made their way to Winter Quarters in Nebraska. In 1848 the family traveled to Utah in the Captain William Perkins Company, called to go south into the Utah County area and settled Provo along with some fifty other families. James also married Amelia Jarvis in 1857, Hedveg Stromfeldt in 1865 and Elizabeth Rosenquist in 1869.
His obituary states that he had "been an active pioneer the greater portion of his life, faithful to his profession as a member of the Church, living a good, honorable life."
He died on 29 June 1882 in Provo, Utah at the age of 72 years. He was buried in the Provo City Cemetery on 30 June 1882. (Short history by Saundra Cox. There is a more complete history of James Bean by Arlene Bean Meservy that covers his life which may be found on FamilySearch.org -- Family Tree.)
