The death angel has again visited this city, this time it takes the spirit of Samuel Igo, Sr. who fo rmore than two thirds of a century has been a prominent man in the business life of this city and community. Mr. Igo had been in failing health for some time and in addition to other complaints was stricken with paralysis a few days ago which was the immediate cause of his death which occurred at 4 olock Thursday afternoon.
For 69 years he has been a resident of this community. Most of this time he was engaged in the livery and sale stable business in which he was very successful. About ten years ago he retired from active business turning his interests over to his sons who have since conducted the business. Mr. Igo was one of the most widely known men in Shelby county,having formed the acquaintance of a great many people through business relations at his livery and horse sale stable which he successfully conducted here.
Samuel Igo was born in Piatt county Ohio on March 7, 1827, being at the time of his death 80 years, four months and 23 days of age. He came to Shelby county,Illinois, 69 years ago. On December 23,1852, he was united in marriage to Miss Louisa Jane Phelps. Mrs. Igo passed away July 1st, 1899. Mr. and Mrs. and Mrs. Igo were the parents of ten children of whom three, Mrs. Matilda Biggs, Mrs. Alice Foster and John William Igo are now at rest. Mrs. Biggs died July 29, 1869, Mrs. Foster on July 29, 1889 and J. William, the son on March 27, 1904. Mrs. Briggs left two children, Mrs. J. H.Hite and Coleman Biggs who were reared to womanhood and manhood under the care of their grandfather. The surviving children are Mrs. Rudolph Klauser, Mrs. S.H.Carr, George,Samuel and Charles Igo of this city. Mrs. George F.Smth of Chicago, and Mrs. Virgil B. Smith of Evansville, Ind.
Besides the children,Mr. Igo leaves one brother, Michael Igo of this city and seventeen grandchildren to mourn his department.
During his last illness he was tenderly cared for by his children who were devotedly attached to their father. No man was ever more indulgent and fondly devoted to his children than was Mr. Igo. Every wish was gratified if in his judgement it was for the best.
The funeral services were held at the family home on W.Main street at 2:30 oclock Saturday afternoon. Rev. Robertson of the Christian church officiating. Dr. Foster now congressman from the 23 district was one among those from out of town who attended the funeral.
