Jake Garrett was the son of John S. Garrett and Elizabeth Bennett. He married first Nancy Tommie Smith, the daughter of Thomas M. Smith and Martha A. Mathson, on 5 February 1881 in Harrison County, Texas. They had six children: John Thomas, Roxie Maebell, Susan Emma, Luster Paul, Willie Ethel and William Franklin. Jake married second Nancy Elizabeth Stacks on 14 August 1899 in Bowie County, Texas. They had three children: Lou Ella, Rufus Clay and Bertha Elizabeth.
