Mary Elizabeth Ashley Devine was the Daughter of John R. Ashley (July 1820SC)and Laura Ann Pruitt (July 1825SC)(aft. 1910AL). She was the Sister of:

Mary Elizabeth Ashley married James Monroe "J. M." Devine on May 1867 in Demopolis, AL (date taken form her widow's application for pension). Their Children were:

Mary had a hard life after the death of her husband, James Monroe "J.M." Devine died in 1889. He was in the Civil War and Mary tried to draw a widow's pension.

She filed as widow of James M. Devine; pvt; Co. D; 19th regiment; AL Inf. with affidavits for Witnesses to Application of Widow by Jery M. Sitz, B. C. Garrison, Richard B. Taylor. She only got replys back that James M. Devine had not been found...or that the Name James M. Devine had not been found on the rolls on file in this office, or Co. D or any other Company of the 19th AL Inf.

James Monroe Devine was in the 19th Ala Regt; Inf. CSA; Co. D and served as orderly sergeant of said company, for a period of 3 years previous to April 1865. He was shot in the foot. Mary drew a pension after some lengthly paper work. According to these papers, they had 40 acres of land in Turkeytown; valued at $ 50.00; 2 pigs; household & kitchen funiture; valued at $20.00.

Mary lost four of her sons in the Influenza Epidemic of 1918:
(1.) Arthur J. Devine on Oct. 22, 1918
(2.) Edward J. Devine on Oct. 23, 1918
(3.) Robert Lee Devine on Oct. 25 1918
(4.) William Lecil Devine on Nov. 7, 1918

These sons are buried at Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery in Etowah County AL. The only stone still there is the one for her son, Robert Lee Devine, his headstone reads: Robert L. Devine Feb. 1882-Oct 1918.

James Monroe "J.M." Devine and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Ashley Devine are also buried in this Cemetery and like their other sons, they do not have a grave marker.

Mary was living with her Son Louie Vandy Devine in the 1920 Census and at the time of her death her occupation was : Housekeeper.
