THE GRIM REAPER'S HARVEST
MARGARET HOWE
Margaret Howe was born in Clinton county, Ohio, February 26, 1837, and departed this life at Humeston, Iowa, January 7, 1904, aged sixty-six years, ten months and eleven days, after a life devoid of the usual pleasures and happiness coming to one better blessed with health than she. At the tender age of twelve she underwent a seige of scarlet fever which left her mind debilitated so that the remainder of her life was one long continued day of childhood; in thought, purpose, intent and act, she was a child. Her enjoyment, her plans, all were those of a child. Her kind acts towards others, numerous as they were, were those a child would do for a parent, a brother, a sister or a friend. Her whole life was one of childish symplicity, trust and confidence.
At the age of sixteen she moved with her parents to the Howe homestead, three and one-half miles east of Indianola, where she resided with her parents until their death, after which she resided with her sister, Mrs. James Sherman, until her death, which occurred seven years ago; after that living one year with W. H. Ober, coming almost six years ago to the home of her brother, J. A. Howe, in Humeston, where she resided at the time of her death.
Her last illness was of a peculiar nature. The sands of the hour glass of her life seemed to run slowly but surely, without pain, struggle or complaint. Death came to her as of a cild worn out at play passes quietly away into an undisturbed dreamland.
The funeral services were conducted according to her desires. It was according to her wishes that she was robed in black, and laid to rest in the Humeston cemetery, where she was interred January 9, after a short funeral service conducted at the home of J. A. Howe by Rev. Bradford of the M. E. church.
She was known to but a small circle of the immediate friends of the Howe family, who brought many beautiful floral tributes which were tenderly placed upon her casket and interred with her, sacred to her memory.
