llon Childs Fisherbuck Freese, 102, went home to be with her Lord, on Monday morning, June 8, 2015. She was born in Farrville, the daughter of the late Oliver M. and Junietta R. (Morris) Childs.
A lifelong resident of Grant County, she was raised in Matthews and later moved to Upland, when she married Everett Fisherbuck, on December 10, 1932. They made their home in Upland. He preceded her in death on April 24, 1969.
In 1931, she graduated from Matthews High School, where she was a member of the Matthews High School Quartet, for which she played the piano. She continued her education at Ball State University.
On August 8, 1973, she married Virgil Freese, in Upland. He preceded her in death on June 22, 1979.
Mrs. Freese worked for 10 years at Willman Lumber, then cashier at United Bank, where she also served as Secretary of the Board. and retired with 20 years of service at Star Financial Bank, Upland, as a teller and cashier.
Illon was involved in many different ways in the community, including being a member of the Upland Friends Church, and a 77 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star #411, where she had formerly served as the Worthy Matron. She also played the piano for many years at the Friends Church, Matthews Epworth United Methodist Church, Center Chapel United Methodist Church, and also for the Eastern Star.
In her spare time, she enjoyed making afghan blankets and had made over 100 for her family and friends. She enjoyed spending her winters in Florida and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy Vance, Upland; seven grandchildren; Phyllis Vance, Carole (Jerry) Smith, Sheree (Gary) Leaf, Phil Vance, Claire (Brian) Campbell, Alice (Steve) Dortch, and Ann (John) Thomas; nine great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Campbell; two sons-in-law, Carl Vance and Albert Campbell, Jr. and siblings, Robert, Charles “Chuck”, Earl, Herman, L.D., and Morris Childs, Elizabeth Losh, Delight Godburry, and infants Neva & Nina Childs.
