Moses M. McCoy enlisted as a Private into Company B, 15th Regiment, (Monroe Light Infantry) at 18 years old on May 3, 1861 in Union County, N.C. Garrisoned at Yorktown, Va., 1861; Seven Days Battles, 1862; Savage Station, 1862; Malvern Hill, 1862; Maryland Campaign, 1862, Harper's Ferry, 1862, Antietam (Sharpsburg), 1862; Fredericksburg, 1862; Wilderness Campaign, 1864; Spotsylvania Court House, 1864; Cold Harbor, 1864; Petersburg, 1864.

Moses M. McCoy was Court-martialed on January 1864 (title of record G.O. #1-1), charges not stated, but he was returned to duty. He was captured at hatcher's Run during the Battle at Petersburg, Va., and was a P.O.W. incarcerated at The Prisoner of War Camp at Hart's Island, New York.

He was released June 18, 1865 after taking The oath of Allegiance.

His description was given as follows – complexion: fair, hair: dark, eyes: blue, height: 5ft. 6in, place of residence: Union County, North Carolina.
