Adkerson Eugene 'Addie' Cates was born March 26, 1876, in Athens, Alabama (Limestone County), son of John Thomas Cates (1845-1927) and Matilda Jane Smith (1855-1949).

The 1880 Federal Census for Precinct 1, Texas (Delta County) shows Adkerson Eugene Cates, age 3, born in Alabama; living with his father, J. T. Cates, a farmer, age 31, born in Alabama; and his mother, Matilda Jane, age 24, born in Alabama. Also living in the household were Addie's siblings: Robert G. Cates, age 6, born in Alabama; James M. Cates, age 5, born in Alabama; and Lenora Cates, age 1, born in Texas.

Addie was the grandson of Colonel Gaines Chism Smith (1822-1910) who fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War.

Addie married Annie Bell Waits, who was born November 5, 1883, in Cincinatti Arkansas (Washington County), daughter of Milton Caliway Waits (1847-1919) and Mary Nicholas (1849-1935). Annie and Addie ultimately would have the following children: Lee Everett Cates, Gaines Edgel Cates, Dovie Zelda Cates, Mary Jane Cates, Hattie Cates, and Eula Star Cates.

The 1910 Federal Census for Township 12, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Addie E. Cates, a farmer, age 33, born in Alabama; and his wife, Annie, age 26, born in Arkansas. Living with them were four children: Lee E. Cates, age 8; Gaines E. Cates, age 6; Zelda Cates, age 4; and Mary J. Cates, age 5 months; all born in Oklahoma.

The 1920 Federal Census for Brown, Oklahoma (Bryan County) shows Addie Cates, a truck farmer, age 42, born in Alabama; and his wife, Annie, age 36, born in Arkansas. Living with them were four children: Edgel, age 16; Zelda, age 13; Mary, age 10; and Hattie, age 4 years 1 month; all born in Oklahoma.

Addie died April 14, 1952 in Armstrong, Oklahoma (Bryan County) and was buried in Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County). Annie died April 22, 1969 in Armstrong, Oklahoma and was buried in Highland Cemetery beside her husband.
