Bernice Evelyn Gilliland Petersen was born on 8 January, 1913 at Blair, Nebraska to Albert James Gilliland and Margaret Sidney Allen King and died in Diamond Care Center, Bridgewater, South Dakota on 6 October 2015 at the age of 102 years, 8 months and 28 days.
She attended the Blair Public School finishing the 6th grade. She moved with her family to Parkston, South Dakota to farm. They farmed there until 1928 when her family moved back to Blair, Nebraska and farmed the E.M. Beaty farm consisting of 212 acres.
Out of all Bernice’s childhood years she said that she never went to town, except one time to a carnival held at the Mitchell Corn Palace, in Mitchell, South Dakota. Bernice’s dad got a brand-new black Model-A car with side curtains by selling some hogs. She said her older brother, Albert, got to take the car girl’n. When she was sixteen, the family moved back to Blair, Nebraska on a farm near the Reservoir Hill. Bernice’s sister, Violet was married to Carl Hansen and one time they brought their friend Carl Petersen to the Gilliland farm. Bernice and Carl hit it off and started dating. Carl usually drove to Bernice’s in his blue, two-seated coupe, but Bernice’s dad had other ideas and would run him off, but always Carl would come back.
Bernice was united in marriage to Carl Petersen on 9 December 1932 at Omaha, Douglas, Nebraska and to this union there was one daughter, Betty and a son that died at infancy. Following their marriage they farmed and during the late 1930’s and early 1940”s Carl worked for Armour Packing Company in Omaha.
During World War II he did carpenter work at Mead Ordinance, Hastings Ordinance and finally at the Scribner Air Base. After the war they went back to farming.
During the 1960’s and 1970’s Bernice and Carl became painting contractors for a real estate agency in Omaha, Nebraska.
They moved to Bonesteel, South Dakota in 1974 and remained active in painting and remodeling houses in the area. Bernice enjoyed mowing in her later years and volunteered to mow the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Fairfax, SD for a number of years. Since 2007 Bernice has resided at the Diamond Care Center in Bridgewater, South Dakota.
She was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Margaret, husband Carl, daughter and son in law Betty and Dean Sabalka, five sisters, two brothers and one granddaughter Carol Perlenfein.
Bernice is survived by four grandchildren Rita Umberger, Shirley Fredrickson, Pam Wells and Dean Sabalka, Jr., nine great grandchildren and 26 great great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
