Ebenezer Sheldon was captured during the Deerfield Massacre in 1704 and marched to Canada. But he was eventually ransomed by his father, John Sheldon, and lived in the "Old Indian House" in Deerfield and kept a tavern. In about 1740, he was one of the founders of Bernardston, or "Fall Town", as it was originally known. He sold the "Old Indian House" in Deerfield to Jonathan Hoyt in 1744, and was later known in Bernardston as an "Old Indian Fighter", having fought against the French and Indians in King George's War and the French and Indian War, losing one son in each. He built Sheldon's Fort in Bernardston.

Husband of Thankful Barnard Sheldon, married Dec 3,1714.

Children: Ebenezer Sheldon Jr, Remembrance Sheldon, Thankful Sheldon, Abner Stebbins Sheldon, Mercy Sheldon Hoyt, Amasa Sheldon, Eliakim Sheldon, Hannah Sheldon, Elijah Sheldon, and Elisha Sheldon.

Inscription

(The stones of what I believe to be those of Ebenezer Sheldon and his wife Thankful are very difficult to read. His is marked "D.E.S" (for Deacon Ebenezer Sheldon), and hers is marked "T.S", and the stones are located in Old Bernardston Cemetery.)
