Born in Timpson, Texas to Robert Monroe and Sara Elizabeth Nolen Crump he grew up in a large family with 10 siblings. Mr. Crump registered for the World War I draft on the first national registration day, June 5, 1917 at the age of 27. Eleven months later he along with over 100 other men from Shelby County answered the draft call in Center, Texas and was inducted on May 27, 1918. They left the following morning for Camp Travis where they received basic training. From there he was transferred to Camp MacArthur, Texas and served with the 7th Supply Train of the Quartermaster Corps for the duration. He was honorably discharged on February 18, 1919 and awarded the World War I Victory Medal and the World War I honorable discharge lapel pin. He returned to a life of farming in Shelby County and at the age of 39 he married Miss. Ruby Brittain. At the age of 48 he registered for the World War II draft but was not called to serve. He lived a long life passing on May 7, 1989 at the age of 99.
