I copied this from a book entitled Lampassas County, Texas History.
On July 30 , 1880 Lorenzo & Issac Clawson shot and killed James J. Smith of Coryell County. Mr. Smith was employed by D. B. Taylor of San Saba County to assist in driving cattle from Coryell County to San Saba County. The night before the murder, Lorenzo came to Taylor's camp and told Taylor that Smith said something about him he had to take back. Taylor told Clawson to leave Smith alone.
The Clawson's had just recently moved from Coryell County to the Senterfitt area. People in the neighborhood asked Mr. Smith, who was also from Coryell County what kind of people the Clawsons were. Smith said they had to leave Coryell County for stealing cattle and they were no good.
On the following morning, July 30, 1880 at about 7:30, Lorenzo & Issac Clawson confronted James J. Smith near the residence of Jefferson Huffstutler on Antelope Creek. Lorenzo told Smith "to take it back" and drew his pistol. Issac said let him have it and Lorenzo fired the pistol and the bullet struck Smith in the chest. After being shot, Mr. Smith exclaimed to the Clawson's "You are damned cowards!" Then he asked his father-in-law, J. H. Hubbard to take care of his family. Lorenzo, with pistol still in hand ordered Mr. Hubbard not to make a move to help Mr. Smith as Clawson did not mind to watch a man die. The Clawson's then watched until Smith was just about dead.
The Clawson's escaped and were never tried for their crime. The wanted list for 1897-98 listed the Clawson's as fugitives from justice & belived to be in New Mexico.
I believe these two are my great grandfather's, Nathaniel E. Clawson, brothers.
Nat had a son, my grandfather, named Issac Lorenzo. Nathaniel's wife Frances Moorhead and James J. Smith had an ancestor in common, David Smith married to Bersheba Harrington. It's Frances' and James' great grandfather. So they killed their sister-in-law's cousin.- Kathy Wray
