Albert T. Shoemake was 6 years old in 1860 when the census was taken in Union Township, Wayne Co., Iowa.

Thanks to Darlene Casteel for providing the following emigration story which was published in the "Grants Pass Daily Courier" on April 3, 1935:

"Early in the spring of 1873, Albert Shoemake [note - brother of Marianne Shoemake], then a lad of 20 years, with his parents and his seven brothers and sister, left Call County, Missouri, for the West. The trip was made by "emigrant train", a mode of transportation so much speedier than the covered wagon that it only took 13 days to go to San Francisco - but a far cry from the stream-line trains of today.

"This train stopped for all other traffic, including freight trains, and had none of the conveniences of the parlor car. A plain, hard uncushioned board extended around the entire car, affording seating space for the passengers, and each family's personal effects were piled in the middle of the floor. All the cooking was done on a small flat-topped stove.

"Once when the train started up after having [stopped for] a time, a young man was left behind. Noting this, Albert dashed to the brake and set it so hard the car was nearly derailed. The crew made an attempt to discover the "would- be brakeman" but were unsuccessful; however, the train stopped and the tardy passenger picked up.

"In San Francisco, teams and wagons were bought and the family with their bags and luggage proceeded on toward Oregon. The first winter was spent in the vicinity of Ashland and the Roxy Ann Mountain near Medford. The following fall they moved to Williams Creek, then known as Williamsburg where they made their home for 25 years.

"Later a homestead on McMullin Creek, a tributary of Deercreek, became the home of Albert and his young family.

"Of the eight Shoemake children only the local man and two sisters remain: Mrs. Clara Clemmons of Grand Rapids, Neb. and MRS. MARY SARGENT of Gold Hill, Ore.

"Mr. Shoemake was born on August 21, at Napoleon, Indiana and married to the former Etta Clark, and has three children, Ada Hurlburt of San Francisco, Alberta Shoemake of Grants Pass, and William Shoemake of Portland.

"Mrs. Shoemake, a daughter of John R. and Matilda Clark, came to Oregon in 1892 and was married to the Josephine county pioneer in 1894. She was born January 24, 1873, at Red Oak, Iowa."

The following is further data for Albert and his family:
