JOHN WILLIAM HARNEY (1921-1993)
The son of Grover James Harney and Frances (Caffery) of NE Wyoming, John W. was born 25 May 1921, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. He was called J.W. by his brothers Howard, Thomas, and Stanley Harney, and sisters Rhoda and Nadine. He lived on the family ranch at Colony, Wyoming until the age of twenty-one. He attended rural school at Colony and graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1941. He attended Black Hills State University, Spearfish, and University of Washington, in Seattle. He taught school in Wyoming before moving to the Portland, Oregon, area in 1954. He graduated from Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College in Portland in 1960.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1950. He was a self-employed real estate broker in the Portland area for many years before his retirement in 1980. He married Coye Lily Englishbey, 23 August 1952. They have a son, John Ross Harney, of Kenmore, Washington. John William 'J.W.' Harney died of a heart attack Sunday, 18 July 1993, at his home in Milwaukie, Oregon.
