James Emerson Boston was the son of Samuel Boston (1828-1886) who was born in Kentucky and died in Putnam County, Missouri; and Nancy (Vestal) Boston (1827-1898) who was born in Macon County, Missouri and died in Putnam County, Missouri.

In the census dated November 30, 1850, Macon County, Missouri, James was age 6 months old, making him born in June of 1850. His death certificate states his date of birth is unknown but that he died June 6, 1932 at the age of "about 84." Actually, he would have been 82.

In the 1900 census of Saline County, Missouri, James and Lizzie were ages 52 and 51 and had the following children in the home: Hattie 20, Ada M. 12, Cora L. 10, Charley 8, Willie 5, Ora 2, and Walter 5 months. James' occupation was merchant.

In the 1910 census of Saline County, Missouri, James was listed as a grocery merchant. Children in their home at that time were Cora 21, Willie 16, Ora 12, and Walter 10. Also living with them was a granddaughter Goldie Meredith age 5.

In 1920, they were living in the same location and James was listed as a farmer. Two sons were left in the home, William 25, and Walter 20.

In the 1930 census of Saline County, Missouri, James was 86 and Lizzie 72. They were living with their son William E. Boston age 35.
