"Joe Stanley Blackwell, age 71, former Coleman resident, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at a Bryan hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a. m. Wednesday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Elwin Collum officiating. Burial will follow at Coleman Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

"Mr. Blackwell was born September 18, 1929 in Rockwood, Texas and was a son of the late E. B. and Roberta Lee Fuqua Blackwell. He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Coleman High School. He attended Tarleton, graduated with a bachelor's degree in Agriculture Education from Texas A & M and received his Master of Education degree from Hardin-Simmons University. He served in the U. S. Army in Korea. On March 22, 1957, he married Patsy Scarborough in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He taught school in Coleman, Cloudcroft, NM, Mozelle, Anson, Winters and Coahoma. In 1995, he moved to Bryan, Texas where he was residing at the time of his death. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Bryan and also has been a member of the Lion's Club, Gideon's International, a long-time member of the Appaloosa Horse Club and was instrumental in establishing the Junior Rodeo in Coleman. While living in Coleman, he was an active member of the Breeder Feeder Association and, in Winters, was a member of the Young Farmers of America.

"Survivors include his wife, Patsy Blackwell of Bryan, Texas; one son, James Lynn Blackwell and wife Lauris of Austin; one daughter, Renee Blackwell of Bryan; one brother, James Burton Blackwell and wife Louise of Tulsa, Oklahoma; father-in-law, T. L. Scarborough of Coleman; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tommy and Faye Scarborough of Buckeye, AZ; seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Betty June Ferguson and Joy Beth Emmer, and by a brother-in-law, Ted Emmer.

"Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Joseph's Foundation in Bryan, Texas. Family visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 p. m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

"Pallbearers will be Bill Stephenson, Bill Sneed, Marvin Dozier, Tommy Jamison, Leonard Ehrler and Jimmy Hemphill. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy McCorkle, Jay Briggs, Olan Holtz, Bill Clifford, Fred Cross, Charles Williams, Don Norton, Stayton Delleny, Grady Joe Harrison, Roland Beal, James Laird, Mark Griffis, James Hargett, Mayo Marrs, John Walthall, J. L. Gandy, Sam Braswell, David Watson and Bob Russ."
