Abigail Kemp BROOKS was the longtime wife of Revolutionary War hero , Captain William Brooks . Her brothers and brother-in- laws served in the American Revolution . Her sister of Mary Kemp, was wife of John Brooks, her brother- in- law as well. As with many colonial families at that time, patriotic political activity and military service were all encompassing activities for entire families and communities. Abigail kept the familiy farm functioning throughout the difficult war years as her husband was very active in political and mitary activity. She kept her family of 11 children and the Brooks New Hampshire homestead functioning throughout the long war.
Abigail Kemp and Capt. William Brooks, Sr were married on March 29, 1759 in Hollis, Hillsborough Co. NH. William was active in revolutionary circles. He served in the Revolutionary War in those militias that saw much action for many years. The family suffered privations during and after the war. She died before William received his military service pension. William erected a memorial to her.

This couple had 11 children who survived until adulthood. After Abigail died in 1787, William married his second wife, Hepsibah Powers on 20 Sept 1787. This couple had no children. However, after many years of petition effort, finally this widow did receive the government military service pension of William Brooks- by then William had died and Hepsibah had remarried.
