Col. Lee grew up in Ridgewood, N.J. At Ridgewood High School, he was an outstanding athlete, president of the senior class, recipient of the prestigious Thayer award and valedictorian. In 1943, he entered the class of 1946 at West Point. His 30-year Army career took him from Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, Ft. Bliss, Tx., Occupation post-war Germany, Korea, Okinawa and back to West Point, where he was an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics for three years. He was also a graduate of the Command and General Staff School prior to receiving an MS in nuclear engineering. His thesis was published internationally, and he was inducted into Pi Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society.
After three years at the Pentagon, Col. Lee commanded an Artillery Battalion in Germany and served as Post Commander. Following that assignment he attended the Sr. Naval War College where he earned an MA in International Relations before commanding the 108th Artillery Group in Viet Nam. Upon returning to the United States he was reassigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. In 1972 he transferred to NATO in Izmir, Turkey. His last duty station was served at Ft. Monroe, Va., as Chief of Staff, TRADOC.
Upon retirement, Col. Lee and his wife, Cynthia, settled in Williamsburg, residing in Kingsmill, where he was one of the first Chairs and Coordinators of the PGA and LPGA Golf tournaments. He also was a very active member of Bruton Parish Church as well as holding many leadership positions in the Diocese of Southern Va. In addition, he was elected deputy for many years to the National Episcopal General Convention. After 29 years in Kingsmill, he and Mrs. Lee moved to Williamsburg Landing in 2004.
Col. Lee was a member of the Crown Colony Men's Club and President of the Williamsburg Landing Men's Club.
Col. Lee is survived by his wife of 65 years, Cynthia Warren; his sister, Mary Lee Suiter, and his children, Susan Lee-Merrow and The Rev. Dr. Robert V. Lee III and his wife Mirte. Grandchildren include Justin Merrow, Victoria Sanford, Robert V. Lee IV, and Rebecca Lee, and great-grandchildren include Mackenzie and Parker Sanford.
