Joseph's father (1652-1698), while married, had an illegitimate son with Deborah Miller. The incident is mentioned (pgs.345-346) in The Ashley Genealogy by Trowbridge from 1896.

"It was in the spring of 1686, however, that Joseph Ashley found himself involved in a serious difficulty, which gained him much unpleasant notoriety and nearly caused a separation between him and his wife.

A few months previous to his marriage Joseph Ashley had formed an intimacy with Deborah Miller, a young woman in Springfield, which resulted in their being summoned before the court.* In consequence of this affair, his wife in connection with her brother and mother made application for a divorce in February, 1687, but through the exertions of mutual friends they became reconciled and lived together until his death."

In a footnote (pg. 345) of the same book:

Deborah "... was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Marshfleld) Miller and was b. Nov. 9, 1663 in Springfield. Her father was killed in the Falls fight, Oct. 5, 1675. " Debo rah Miller had a son born out of marriage Apr. 16, 1686, named Jabez." [Spring. T. Rec. of Births.] She m. June 9, 1692, James Garrell (or Gerald) of Springfield"

So, Joseph was originally named Jabez Miller. Later in the book on page 383 it looks like Jabez ended up going by Joseph Ashley but it doesn't really mention his illegitimacy nor the name change. However, it is noted in tiny print that he was the son of Joseph (1652-1698). The chapter begins with the heading "The Springfield Branch". To make things even more confusing, Joseph senior had a legitimate son named Joseph who was born 7/27/1686 but that son is listed on page 347 under the chapter called the "West Springfield Branch".

Joseph and his wife Mary had sons Joseph and David.
