Rhoda was born in Vermont and is a Mayflower descendent through the Douglas line. She married at around 17 years old in Vermont, and several of her children were born in that state until it appears the family moved west to Colorado to check out the gold rush in the early 1880s. Eventually the family ended up in Nebraska. Her husband Lyman ends up leaving the family around the 1890s.
