Written by my Great Uncle Charles Beutell: Carl Friedrich Beutel was the third child of Hilarius Beutel and Maria Anna Kast. Hilarius was in the customs service of Baden and was moved frequently from one border town to another. At the time of Carl's birth, Hilarius was stationed in Riebesingen, but his home town was Billigheim so all birth records for his children were sent there. In about 1880, Carl emigrated to Switzerland with his older brother Emil, and in Sept. 18, 1884 he emigrated to the United States, landing in New York City on the S.S. Canada from Le Havre on Sept. 18. He went to Cleveland and found a job as a machinist with Warner and Swazey where he stayed until he became too ill to work in 1924. He is buried in the old Calvary Cemetary in Cleveland.
