(Excerpt from) Transcript of article in North Arkansas Times – January 11, 1868:
"MURDER- We are pained to learn that Capt. Uriah J. Douthit, of Evening Shade, Lawrence County, in this State was murdered near that place on Christmas day. Every good citizen deplores the act, and should make every effort to discover and arrest the murderers. The officers of the civil law should leave nothing undone that can be done.
The body of the murdered man was not found until the Saturday after he was killed. When found, he had been shot in three places – one ball taking effect in the thigh, one in the small of the back, and one in the head. He was found about three miles from his home, and from the horse tracks and other indications, it is supposed that there were two persons engaged in the murder. Capt. Douthit was riding a mule. On Christmas evening, a short time after dark, his mule, with two horses, with saddles on, came to the house of a Mr. Mize, where they were secured until the next morning, when a man, who was unknown to the family, came and took the horses away, stating that the owner of the mule would call for it in a short time. These are the circumstances of the murder, as far as we can learn them. Capt. Douthit had lived in that part of the country for years before the war ...."
