The son of Loren Watters and Kathryn (or Catharine) Cox, Amos was born in Tiffin Township, Defiance County, Ohio.

Amos married Iva Almeda "Ivy" McDonald on 01 Jan 1895 in Calhoun County, Illinois. They were the parents of 11 children.

Amos worked as a wholesale fisherman, and Ivy was a homemaker. Early in their marriage, the family lived in Point Pct. before moving to Foley, Lincoln County, Missouri. They next moved back to Illinois and lived in Hardin, but moved to Gilead Pct. in Calhoun County before 1930. The Watters then moved back to Hardin.

At the time of his death, Amos was 76 years, 7 months and 24 days old. He was buried on 07 Sep 1947 and was survived by his wife, Ivy, who passed away in 1959.
