Car Crash Kills Montauk Woman
Middle Island – a 62-year-old Montauk woman, returning home from a funeral service, was killed beneath her overturned car last night after it careened out of control into a telephone pole.
Crushed to death after she was stricken with an apparent heart attack at 8:27 PM was Mrs. Charlotte McCann, 62, wife of a prominent Montauk fishing dock owner. According to a son, Mrs. McCann was returning home from a wake in Flushing.
Police were summoned to the crash scene, three miles east of the Coram traffic light on Rt. 25, at 8:27, when an antique dealer witnessed the violent smashup.
Mrs. McCann, driving eastward alone in her 1947 Buick convertible, apparently suffered an attack, police said later. She crossed the highway to hit a telephone pole on the driver’s side, and continued on into a ditch where the car rolled over two or three times. After cutting the pole off at is base, the car rolled for 100 feet.
The middle-aged, stocky woman was thrown through the roof of the demolished convertible. Her crushed body was found lying alongside of the car which righted itself.
Brookhaven Town Police Chief Edward N. Bridge, and Ptls. Francis W. Harrison, Gerard E Gearity and Joseph Townsend rushed to the scene to start an investigation.
Coroner P. Jerome Laviano ordered the body removed to Ruland’s Funeral Home, Patchogue, where an autopsy will be held this morning to determine the cause of death.
Besides her husband John, a native Montauk resident who owns and operates McCann’s Railroad Dock, a landmark fishing dock, Mrs. McCann is survived by two sons, John Jr., James, and two daughters, Charlotte and Ruth.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
