ARMY VETERAN- WW2

Henry “Hank” Zakrzewski, son of John and Anna (Rumpza) Zakrzewski, was born January 27, 1923 at Waubay, SD. He grew up and received his education there.

Henry entered the U.S. Army on March 17, 1943 at Fort Snelling, MN. He served in five major battles with the 237th Engineers of Company B during WWII in Africa, Normandy, France and Rhineland. He was with the first wave of soldiers to land at Utah Beach during the Battle of the Bulge and was a 30-caliber machine gunner during the capture at Akuen, Germany in 1944. On November 11, 1999 he received the Normandy Medal of the Jubilee of Liberty. Following his honorable discharge on October 31, 1945 at Fort Snelling he returned to Waubay.

Henry moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1948. He began employment with John Morrell and Company, a career that would span 28 ½ years before he retired in 1985.

Henry was united in marriage with Wanda Jewell Kellgren on November 28, 1964 in Sioux Falls, where they made their home. Henry and Wanda boarded students from Stewart’s Beauty School for many years.

Henry was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, V.F.W. Post 628, American Legion Post 15, D.A.V. Chapter 1 and Ducks Unlimited. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.

Henry was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Leonard Zakrzewski, John Zakrzewski, Roger Zakrzewski, Ray Zakrzewski; and two sisters, Clara Anderson and Marie Christenson.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church following the committal service.
