Funeral services for Howard Battle Gist, Jr. will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2011, in St. Francis Xavier Cathedral with the Rev. Dan O'Connor and Rev. Craig Scott officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Memorial Park, Pineville, under the direction of John Kramer & Son. Mr. Gist, 91, was born in Alexandria on September 17, 1919, to Howard B. Gist, Sr. and Marcie Eugenie Luckett. He attended the public schools of Rapides Parish and graduated from Bolton High School. He attended Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia and graduated from Tulane University with a B.A. degree and a Juris Doctorate degree from Tulane Law School. While in college, he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and was elected to the Tulane Moot Court Board for outstanding scholarship. He won the Moot Court competition at Tulane Law School and was President of the Law School Senior Class.
While in Law School, he volunteered for the U. S. Navy and was accepted and received a commission. He graduated from the Naval Communication School at Harvard University and obtained the rank of Lieutenant, USNR. During World War II, he continued his duties as a communications officer in both the Atlantic and Pacific Campaigns. His service included tours on the USS Nuthatch and USS West Virginia (BB-48). He saw action during the invasion of the Philippines, Iwo Jima and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. At the end of the war, he was assigned to the Judge Advocate General's office at the Naval Amphibious Base at Coronado, California.
Mr. Gist returned to Alexandria in 1946 and joined the law firm of Gist, Thorton & Murchison with his father. He was a partner in the law firm of Gist, Methvin and Trimble and later Gist, Methvin, Hughes and Munsterman. He maintained an active civil law practice until his death. Howard is survived by the love of his life Rosemary Flynn and they were married in 1950. He is also survived by his six children, Howard (Trey) Battle Gist, III and his wife, Kimberly Craft Gist of Alexandria, Marcie Elizabeth Gist of Alexandria, Stephanie Gist Novakovich and her husband, Eli Novakovich of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Robert Christopher Gist and his wife, Karen Taylor Gist of New Orleans, Ellen Kyle Gist Scroggs and her husband, John Scroggs of Alexandria, William McGowan Gist and his wife, Linda Wood Gist of Houston, Texas. Mr. Gist is also survived by his thirteen grandchildren, Brooke Doyle Thomas, Aynsley Doyle, Graham Landry, Emily Gist Marcotte, Hannah Gist, Christopher Gist, Taylor Gist, Evan Gist, Cullen Gist, Bennett Gist, Peyton Gist, Dylan Scroggs, Jordan Scroggs and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Gist served as the City Attorney for the City of Alexandria during three different administrations and was elected as President of the Louisiana Association of City Attorneys.
Foremost in the many honors he received was that of Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was instrumental in the formation of the Louisiana Association of Defense Attorneys and later served as its President. He was a Past President of the Louisiana Bar Association and the Alexandria Bar Association. In 1997, he received the Causidicus Award as an Outstanding Attorney of the Alexandria Bar Association. He was on the Board of the Louisiana State Bar Foundation and named Outstanding Louisiana Attorney by the Foundation. He was rated an AV Lawyer by the Martindale-Hubbard Legal Directory and was listed in the original publication of "The Best Lawyers in America." He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the Boston Club of New Orleans.
Gist was involved in community affairs in Alexandria and Rapides Parish. He was the attorney and on the Board of Directors of the Security First National Bank and served as its Chairman for 16 years.
He served as counsel and as a board member of CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, the board of the Alexandria Golf & Country Club and was elected in 1969 to the Council of Louisiana State Law Institute (Vice Chairman) and remained active in revisions of the Louisiana Revised Statutes and the Louisiana Civil Code. He practiced worker's compensation, medical malpractice defense and products liability law, as well as banking and municipal law in Louisiana. Additionally, Mr. Gist was a member of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church and served on its Finance Committee.
Howard Gist, Jr. was well known in Central Louisiana as s sportsman, hunter and fisherman. He was a strong advocate for the environment and the sporting interest. As a young man he walked and fished Big Creek with his friends, Joe Richardson, Charlie Prosser and George Foote. He loved to hunt and fish for doves and ducks. In 1955, he gave up golf and bought an outboard motor and along with Luckett Marye and Victor Kramer fished regularly the secret holes on Little River, Cane River and Chicot Lake. He was known for his fishing ability from Toledo Bend and Florida with Bobby Lowther. Howard duck hunted with George Bowdon and his law partner, Dewitt Methvin, on the Coast of Cameron Parish waiting each fall for the opportunity the State's bounty offered him and his many dear friends. He looked forward each fall for the dove hunts with Luckett, his closest friend and relative and to get out to Charles Buckley's camp at River Point with Martin Close, Jr. to wait until 10:30 when the big ducks flew on Catahoula Lake. He will be missed by all and has gone on to his reward.
Friends are asked to call from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday and on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a. m. at John Kramer & Son. Pallbearers will be Randy Pias, Scott Pias, Mike Flynn, Todd Marye, George Gaiennie, Jr., and Graham Landry.
